According to Computer Economics, worldwide financial losses due to malware declined in 2005 to $14.2 billion, a first since 2002. Though this was welcome news for computer users, it was also reported that malware attacks are becoming more covert and focused from being overt earlier. The latter is a cause for worry as the damage due to malware can be unexpected and huge.

Viruses, Trojans and worms are the 3 common types of malware i.e. malicious software, and out of them the worms are the deadliest as they can function without any human intervention. Similar to viruses, worms also have capability to replicate themselves but are self contained i.e. they do not need a host program for propagation unlike viruses. Worms more commonly affect computer networks consisting of servers, routers and clients, even though they can cause damage similar to viruses like deletion of files, corruption of programs etc. Since the internet is just a large network of computer networks, it is very much susceptible to worm attacks.
There is a plethora of antivirus software available in the market. Some versions are offered as freeware, some as shareware and some others for purchase only. A little market research may be required to pick the right one depending on one’s needs. Many of them are available for trial before committing for purchase and can be downloaded from the software provider’s website. However, some of the trial versions can not be uninstalled easily and it is safer to invoke system restore facility before downloading them. Some of the antivirus programs discussed below have generally been rated high on various parameters like cost, ease of use, customer service and effectiveness.
New computer viruses are being created everyday by cyber criminals who are working hard towards achieving their aim. Eugene Kaspersky, a computer security researcher, reported in an article in Security News of November, 2005 that his lab receives 200 to 300 new samples of viruses and Trojans everyday. This shows the enormity of the problem.
